A full comparison study of service discovery approaches for internet of things

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to address the Internet of Things (IoT) service discovery problem and investigate the existing solutions to tackle this problem in many aspects. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents an overview of IoT services aiming at providing a clear understanding about their features because this term is still ambiguous for the IoT service discovery approaches. Besides, a full comparison study of the most representative service discovery approaches in the literature is pre… Show more

“…The interviews also indicated a reluctance of organisations to commit to purchasing technology until standardisation issues are resolved. These findings are closely aligned with the findings by Aziez et al (2019) and Sorri et al (2022) which clearly indicate that the standardisation remains a challenge for IoT have had a direct impact on the willingness of organisations to commit to IoT. Within, this context, it is reasonable to expect that "soft" issues such as human capital will not be at the forefront or organisational endeavour.…”

“…While the benefits of IoT implementation are widely discussed and researched, it is clear from the literature that several challenges remain. Aziez et al (2019) remarked that IoT is not reliable, stable, or standardised while Ahamed et al (2021) noted that applications and platforms behave inconsistently and fail to interpret data thereby making interoperability a challenge. Other researchers such as Rane and Narvel (2021) emphasised the security and privacy threats that IoT poses.…”

“…Also, to ensure autonomy and the lowest possible human intervention, a certain degree of intelligence should be integrated. In this perspective, services need to be self-informative while dynamically hosting and decoupling other services or apps to cope with dynamic changes followed by continuous updates (Aziez et al , 2019).…”

“…Discovery models in the field of IoT/WoT should also consider other essential aspects in CPS, such as interoperability, security, or heterogeneity of services, among other possible examples (Aziez et al 2019). The 27050-1 standard (ISO/IEC 2019) describes electronic discovery, the process of discovering electronically stored information or data.…”
