A Gap-Filling Tool: Predicting Daily Sediment Loads Based on Sparse Measurements

Abstract: Sediment load in streams is known as both a carrier and a potential source of contaminants, while sediment deposition can alter stream flow, stage and morphology, and thereby has broad impacts on stream hydrology, aquatic life, and recreation activity. For vast amounts of watersheds around the world, sparse daily measured sediment data may exist, but continuous and multi-year daily measured sediment data are largely unavailable because of time-consuming and budget constraint for measurements. However, when dev… Show more

“…The plots of annual sediment load with annual discharge showed the following good linear correlations: Y = 2.53X − 100,612 with R 2 = 0.701 for the past 40 years and Y = 3.24X − 117,356 with R 2 = 0.84 for the future 40 years. Similar correlations were obtained for watersheds at various locations in the USA by Ouyang [ 1 ].…”

“…Sediment load in surface waters is a potential source of contaminants to aquatic environments as sediment adsorbs and transports toxic chemicals, excess nutrients, and pathogens, while sediment deposition can change stream flow and morphology and thereby has broad impacts on hydrologic channels, aquatic life, and recreation activity [1]. Agricultural practices, forest disturbances, and urbanization activities are the major sources of sediment contamination and deposition in rivers, streams, and lakes [2][3][4][5].…”
