A General Practitioner’s Guide to Hematopoietic Stem-cell Transplantation

Abstract: Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (hsct) is a medical procedure that consists of infusing stem cells after a short course of chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or both. It can be used in the treatment of various cancers, as well as some benign conditions. In the present review, we discuss the various types of hsct and their main indications. The principles of the transplant procedure itself and the basics of recipient selection are reviewed. Special attention is given to both the immediate and the long-term c… Show more

“…On the other hand, according to the source, HSCs can be obtained from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or CB. Although HSCs were first harvested from bone marrow, nowadays and due to the development of mobilization procedures, such as the use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), peripheral blood is the main source of precursors [ 108 , 109 ].…”

“…Harvesting and printing the cells in the same sitting could only be done with knowledge of specific markers for MSC, which we lack at present. This is feasible for other cell types with, such as for example the hematopoietic stem cells, which are currently used without manipulation in cancer patients following whole body irradiation ( Bazinet and Popradi, 2019 ). For MSCs however, at present there is a lack of robust techniques for cell isolation and purification that do not affect MSCs biology and then cell preservation strategies.…”

“…Hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) is utilized to treat a variety of malignant and non-malignant disorders [1]. High doses of chemotherapy often in combination with irradiation are used to ablate hematopoietic stem cells as well as cells of the immune system which mediate rejection.…”
