A glacier inventory for the western Nyainqentanglha Range and the Nam Co Basin, Tibet, and glacier changes 1976–2009

Abstract: Abstract. The western Nyainqentanglha Range is located in the south-eastern centre of the Tibetan Plateau. Its northwestern slopes drain into Lake Nam Co. The region is of special interest for glacio-climatological research as it is influenced by both the continental climate of Central Asia and the Indian Monsoon system, and situated at the transition zone between temperate and subcontinental glaciers. A glacier inventory for the whole mountain range was generated for the year around 2001 using automated remot… Show more

“…The implied shrinkage rate of ∼−1.4% a −1 over ∼35 years is implausibly large for this area and suggests that CGI-1 may have included too much snow or have involved misidentified glacier areas. Similarly, Bolch and others (2010) present evidence that the Chinese topographic maps misinterpret glacier outlines in their study area in Mount Nyainqentanghla.…”

“…The uncertainty of the outline position, chosen to be one half of an image pixel (Bolch and others, 2010), i.e. ±30 m for Landsat MSS and ±15 m for Landsat-7 TM/ETM+, Landsat8 OLI and HJ-1A/ 1B, was multiplied by the length of the margin.…”

“…Glaciers with a greater proportion of their areas at higher elevations are insensitive to the increase in air temperature and will lose a small amount of mass under warming and increased precipitation. This phenomenon is very significant for glaciers in the same region, where large differences in mass balance and retreat rate are observed in glaciers that are geographically close to one another (Bolch and others, 2010;Yao and others, 2012;Farinotti and others, 2015;Liu and Liu, 2015). Take Zhadang and Gurenhekou glaciers in the West Nyainqentanglha Range as examples.…”

“…The uncertainties of the glacier area was estimated by determining a buffer area developed about each test glacier (Bolch et al 2010;Granshaw and Fountain 2006). The buffer area around each glacier was fixed to double the digitization error (Bolch et al 2010;Racoviteanu et al 2008;Wang et al 2009).…”

“…The buffer area around each glacier was fixed to double the digitization error (Bolch et al 2010;Racoviteanu et al 2008;Wang et al 2009). Then the amount of uncertainty of glacier area (U area ) for each glacier was acquired by the following formula (Hall et al 2003;Ye et al 2006):…”
