A global perspective on western Mediterranean precipitation extremes

Abstract: The Mediterranean region has been declared a climate change hotspot due, among other reasons, to an expected increase in the torrential rains that frequently affect this densely populated area. However, the extent to which these torrential rains are connected to other regions outside the Mediterranean remains uncertain. Here we simulate 160 extreme precipitation events with an atmospheric model enabled for state-of-the-art moisture tracking and demonstrate that large scale moisture transport is a more importan… Show more

“…In this case, the measures applied to soil management systems that greatly reduce on-site runoff and soil erosion and can also contribute to the improvement of soil quality need urgent evaluation since this region is seriously affected by severe land degradation and high susceptibility to desertification. This is an issue of special concern considering that the Mediterranean region has been declared a climate change hotspot for various reasons, but especially because an expected increase in torrential rains [99] will increase the potential for soil loss by erosion.…”

“…Rainfall is an effective way to remove aerosols from the atmosphere, and wet deposition is divided into in-cloud and under-cloud removal processes (Jung et al, 2023;Ryu et al, 2022). Secondary evaporation under clouds plays an important role (Insua-Costa et al, 2022;Liberoff & Poca, 2023) in redistributing the tracer mass vertically.…”

“…India is a vast country that exhibits significant variation in climate characteristics. Based on geographical extent, Indian sub-continent is around 3.287 million km 2 . The Indian subcontinent is categorized into five homogeneous zones based on similarities in precipitation characteristics, according to the India Meteorological Department www.nature.com/scientificreports/ (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) research study RR-138 56 .…”
