A Grid-Based Image Archival and Analysis System

Abstract: Here the authors present a Grid-aware middleware system, called GridPACS, that enables management and analysis of images in a massive scale, leveraging distributed software components coupled with interconnected computation and storage platforms. The need for this infrastructure is driven by the increasing biomedical role played by complex datasets obtained through a variety of imaging modalities. The GridPACS architecture is designed to support a wide range of biomedical applications encountered in basic and … Show more

“…Grids are providing computing resources and workload systems that ease application code deployment and usage. Moreover, grids are providing distributed data management services that are well suited for handling medical data geographically spread throughout various medical centers [13,20,12,24,7]. However, existing grid middlewares often only deal with data files and do not provide higher-level services for manipulating medical data.…”

“…Hastings et al [32] complemented the PACS by providing an extra management of the information using XML language, allowing a more friendly environment for large biomedical databases. Similarly, Mahmoudi et al [45] developed a web-application tool connected to a PACS system to allow direct access to the data.…”

“…Hastings et al [32] addressed the work to metadata and data management issues using a generic, distributed, XML-based data management system. According to the authors, the use of XML schemas and XML documents allowed to manage and publish data models to efficiently store, query, reference and create virtualized XML views into distributed and interconnected databases.…”

“…The NeuroGrid [4] project aimed to provide image archival, curation and analysis capabilities for the neuroimaging community using Grid technology. GridPACS -A Grid-enabled System for Management and Analysis of Large Images [6,7] describes an example providing successful management for large images in the medical domain. SIDB (Scientific Image Database) -is open source software for archiving 2D and 3D microscopy images [8].…”
