A Guidance System for Wide-area Complex Disaster Evacuation based on Ant Colony Optimization

Abstract: This paper reports the results of applying our approach discovering safe evacuation routes to practical situations. Our approach is based on the ant colony optimization (ACO) and it is practical in the light of a real case with a tsunami. ACO have been often employed for finding evacuation routes in traditional approaches, which only take advantage of ants' behavior more frequently following traces of other ants through pheromone communications. We assume that there are a lot of danger zones in the damaged are… Show more

“…In this experiment, the topology was configured to simulate scenarios with high population density, such as suburban areas near an urban centers. An analogous situation to present MANET usage is during emergencies, like disaster scenarios, where users equipped with mobile terminals adhere to specific movement protocols [24,25]. In such constrained and time-sensitive data acquisition situations, low latency communication emerges as a crucial factor, making method proposed in this study highly effective.…”

“…Ohta et al used ACO to construct an evacuation route. Goto et al [7] extended ACO to prioritize avoidance of dangerous locations. In the study by Goto et al, deodorant pheromones were given to ACO for evacuation route search.…”

“…In [27], [28], the authors proposed a method using improved artificial bee colony for the path planning and exit selection of pedestrians to reduce the evacuation time. Goto et al [29] proposed to utilize ant colony optimization in wide-area complex evacuation scenario considering the danger zones when natural disasters happen. However, these papers assumed that the pedestrians are highly familiar with the environment and rational enough to identify the optimal path, which may not be the case in reality, especially when pedestrians are not familiar with the surrounding environment.…”
