A Guide to COVID‐19: a global pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus SARS‐CoV‐2

Abstract: The emergence of the SARS‐CoV‐2 strain of the human coronavirus has thrown the world into the midst of a new pandemic. In the human body, the virus causes COVID‐19, a disease characterized by shortness of breath, fever, and pneumonia, which can be fatal in vulnerable individuals. SARS‐CoV‐2 has characteristics of past human coronaviruses, with close genomic similarities to SARS‐CoV, the virus that causes the disease SARS. Like these related coronaviruses, SARS‐CoV‐2 is transmitted through the inhalation of dro… Show more

“…In addition, very strict and severe social and economic measures, with the potential danger of causing a profound global crisis, have been taken [ 7 ]. In this context, even if an effective vaccine is promisingly close to becoming available, drugs are needed for infected people [ 8 ]. From experience with other pathogens, we have learnt that the best therapeutic strategy consists in administrating a combination of several drugs acting through different mechanisms, in order to minimize the probability of drug resistance appearance [ 9 ].…”

“…The recent uncertainties of a future vaccine (for example, AstraZeneca is re-evaluating its clinical trials) suggests the need and urgency for other pharmaceutical options and is also encouraging research into not-yet-approved medicinal compounds. In this context, even if an effective vaccine may become available, effective drugs are currently needed for infected people [ 9 ].…”

“…In critical patients, complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), shock, and septicemia may cause multiple organ dysfunction syndromes (MODS) and even death [3,4]. Up to June 2, 2020, there are 6,265,496 cases diagnosed for COVID-19 and 375,526 people have died from the disease in 188 countries and regions [5].…”
