“…In general, in-situ preservation of hermit crabs in their host shells is rare in the fossil record (Dunbar & Nyborg 2003;Jagt et al 2006), in spite of several recent records (see e.g., Fraaije et al 2008;Garassino et al 2009a;Fraaije & Polkowsky 2016;Pasini et al 2020). The most ancient examples known to date are of those preserved in ammonite shells, with records from the upper Pliensbachian (Lower Jurassic) of southern Germany (Jagt et al 2006), the Upper Jurassic of central Russia (Mironenko 2020) and the Hauterivian (Lower Cretaceous) of Yorkshire, United Kingdom (Fraaije 2003). During the Early Cretaceous, paguroids appear to have made the switch from ammonite conchs to empty gastropod shells (Van Bakel et al 2008), as has been documented by fairly numerous finds from central Europe in recent years.…”

“…Unfortunately, both publications contained no pictures of the specimens; the specimen of Archeosolenocera from Shmakov (2016) is included in the present work. Later, Mironenko (2020) reported the occurrence of a hermit crab buried in an ammonite shell (Tithonian of Moscow). The present paper provides new and detailed information on several recently discovered samples of crustaceans that have never been previously reported for the area.…”

“…Hermit crabs (superfamily Paguroidea Latreille, 1802) are an interesting and diverse group of decapod crustaceans with a widely distributed but fragmentary fossil record (i.e., Via, 1959;Beschin et al, 2002Beschin et al, , 2005Beschin et al, , 2010Beschin et al, , 2012Garassino et al, 2009a, b;Garassino, 2010a, b, 2011;Fraaije et al, 2011Fraaije et al, , 2015Fraaije et al, , 2020Schweigert et al, 2013;Fraaije, 2014;Garassino et al, 2014;Hyžný et al, 2016;De Angeli and Caporiondo, 2017;Ferratges et al, 2020Ferratges et al, , 2021aMironenko, 2020;Ossó, 2020;Pasini et al, 2020) that extends back to the Jurassic (see Fraaije et al, 2022). This is due in part to their highly specialized morphology with poorly mineralized pleon adapted to life inside empty shells or other cavities (e.g., Lemaitre, 1989Lemaitre, , 1990Walker, 1992;de Forges et al, 2001).…”
