A high‐efficient rotating disk photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reactor with macro light harvesting pyramid‐surface electrode

Abstract: A series of pyramid‐surface TiO2/Ti electrodes were proposed, fabricated, and used in a rotating disk photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reactor to treat rhodamine B (RB) solution. Compared with conventional planar electrode, pyramid‐surface electrode exhibited much lower light reflectivity, larger photocurrent, and better treatment efficiency. For samples containing 20 to 150 mg L−1 RB, 100– 98% color removal, and 87–30% COD removal were obtained in 150 min using 1/3 (h/w) pyramid‐surface electrode, much higher than… Show more

“…As for the low surface area of the flat electrode, the mass transfer has been restricted and, even worse, about 30% of the incidence are reflected and lost. Combined with the corrugated plate used in photocatalytic reactor, Li et al has set up a photoelectrocatalytic reactor with a pyramid-surface electrode [54,110,112,113]. Either the light utilization or the surface area is enlarged.…”

“…Either the light utilization or the surface area is enlarged. The experimental results show the decolorization efficiency increases by 53%, of which 25% is owed to improving the light utilization and 28% to enlarging the surface area [110]. Aiming to increase the surface area and enhance the photo-generated carriers and holes, the TiO 2 nanotube (TNT) was immobilized on the disk surface using the anodization method [114,115].…”

“…In macro aspect, the thin liquid film PC reactor can effectively reduce light loss caused by solution absorption [6,7]. To further change the planar substrate to wedge or pyramid structures can not only enlarge PC surface area, but also enhance light utilization efficiency due to multiple reflection of incident light [8,9]. In micro aspect, photocatalysts with light-harvesting morphologies such as flower-like structure [10], hollow sphere [11] and core-shell structure [12] have also been synthesized, among which, bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX; X = Cl, Br) have attracted intensive attention in recent years because of their high PC activity and layered crystal structure [13][14][15].…”
