A High-Energy Ball Milling as a Useful Technique for the Synthesis of CaCu3Ti4O12Electroceramics

Abstract: This paper shows that CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) can be synthesized through the high-energy ball milling of CaO, CuO and TiO2 powders. The dielectric characterization of CCTO obtained mechanochemically as well as, for comparison, by a high-temperature method is presented. Moreover, it is illustrated that zirconium oxide in contrast to a metallic iron generated during milling processes improves the properties of CCTO in terms of ceramic capacitors.

“…Mechanochemical methods offer simplicity, one-step operation, solvent-free synthesis and/or modification of properties of advanced products. 252,253 The ternary oxide system CaO-TiO 2 -CuO is a very interesting material for application as capacitors. This material was investigated in detail for CaTiO 3 and its modification by substitution of calcium (Ca 1Àx Cu x TiO 3 , 0 r x r 0.75) and titanium sub-lattice (CaTi 1Àx Cu x O 3 , 0 r x r 0.4) by copper.…”

“…The temperature dependence of real part of dielectric permittivity (ε') for BaTiO 3 /T, BaTiO 3 /Fe, and Ba-TiO 3 /Zr samples [21] 100-500nm and the lack of the high-temperature processing during synthesis eliminates the problem of chemical inhomogeneity of the material (Figure 16b). Grain boundary problem in ceramics CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 and their influence on its dielectric properties are widely discussed in the papers [62][63][64][65]. Dielectric properties of studied perovskite-related CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 compound synthesized under different conditions as a temperature relationship of the real component of dielectric permittivity (ε') and dielectric loss (tan δ) at the field frequency of 1 kHz are presented in Figure 17a and b, respectively.…”
