A highly electroluminescent molecular square

Abstract: Chiral molecular triangles and squares containing the Pt(diimine) metallocorners were synthesized and characterized, and used as the triplet MLCT luminophore in highly efficient light-emitting devices.

“…On the other hand, although both triangle 98 and square 126a were isolated from a reaction mixture, the triangle 98 in CD 2 Cl 2 was converted to a square, which was sensitive to the Scheme 53. Synthesis of chiral square metallacycle 126 [202].…”

“…The chiral molecular square [{Pt(4,4 -dtbpy)( -Ac-L82)} 4 ] (126a) in the presence of Cu I catalyst and diethylamine was obtained as a mixture in moderate yields by reaction of Pt(4,4 -dtbpy)Cl 2 with the acetyl substituted 1,1 -bi-2-naphthol (BINOL)-derived 4,4 -bis(alkynyl) ligand (L82) (Scheme 53) [202]. In this reaction, a mixture of trimetallic complex, triangle [{Pt(4,4 -dtbpy)( -L82)} 3 ] (98) was also obtained (vide supra).…”

“…The acyclic ligand, by contrast, provided only 80% ee under the same reaction conditions. This same general protocol using Pt(ii) diimine complex 244 as a precursor afforded chiral molecular triangle 245 and squares 246-247 (Scheme 6.33) [86]. Whereas both triangle 245 and square 246 were formed and isolated from the self-assembly reaction of an acetyl protected BINOL precursor, triangle 245 cleanly converts to square 246 when left in solution over time at room temperature.…”
