Operating envelope is an important concept in industrial operations. Accurate identification for operating envelope can be extremely beneficial to stakeholders as it provides a set of operational parameters that optimizes some key performance indicators (KPI) such as product quality, operational safety, equipment efficiency, environmental impact, etc. Given the importance, data-driven approaches for computing the operating envelope are gaining popularity. These approaches typically use classifiers such as support vector machines, to set the operating envelope by learning the boundary in the operational parameter spaces between the manually assigned 'large KPI' and 'small KPI' groups. One challenge to these approaches is that the assignment to these groups is often ad-hoc and hence arbitrary. However, a bigger challenge with these approaches is that they don't take into account two key features that are needed to operationalize operating envelopes: (i) interpretability of the envelope by the operator and (ii) implementability of the envelope from a practical standpoint. In this work, we propose a new definition for operating envelope which directly targets the expected magnitude of KPI (i.e., no need to arbitrarily bin the data instances into groups) and accounts for the interpretability and the implementability. We then propose a regularized 'GA + penalty' algorithm that outputs an envelope where the user can tradeoff between bias and variance. The validity of our proposed algorithm is demonstrated by two sets of simulation studies and an application to a real-world challenge in the mining processes of a flotation plant.

Most brown fields have inherent issues ranging from, but not limited to increasing water production, reservoir pressure decline, increasing sand production and wells/facility integrity challenges due to Asset aging. For the Habic Assets, frequent incidents of insecurity and vandalization of facilities has added non-engineering challenges to the effective management of Assets. Well production uptime is highly impacted by this new challenge, and this has necessitated continuous optimization and innovation to ensure that the Asset remains profitable. This paper presents the simple and cost-effective approach used by the integrated Petroleum Engineering & Asset Production teams to deliver business promise for the Asset. The integrated team reviewed various strategies to harness the benefits of the age long "fix-the-basics" tools to arrest the dwindling fortunes of the Assets. Two key approaches were employed: firstly, surveillance data was incorporated in integrated production system models (IPSM) and using the Chan diagnostic tool, well operating envelopes were defined and used for optimization of producers. Based on the outcome of the reviews, the team proposed several production system optimizations with combined estimated gain of ca. 7800 bopd within allowable rate. Secondly, long closed-in well stock meant for temporary securing in line with standard well integrity recommended practice were flow tested using surveillance data gathered as a guide. The team prioritized strings in terms of historical closed-in tubing head pressure (CITHP), held risk assessments sessions and secured mitigations to perform the flow trial. This led to the identification of 7 conduits with combined potential of 4200 bopd. Both restoration and optimization efforts from integrated review of producing and closed-in well stock has added a combined potential of 6200 bopd with a further ca.5800 bopd expected once the outstanding optimization opportunities and open-up of 3 other closed-in wells are implemented and tested.

Dynamic Well Operating Envelop (WOE) allows to ensure that well is maintained and operated within design limits and operated in the safe, stable and profitable way. WOE covers the Well Integrity, Reservoir constraints and Facility limitations and visualizes them on well performance chart (Hamzat et al., 2013). Design and operating limits (such as upper and lower completion/facilities design pressures, sand failure, erosion limitations, reservoir management related limitations etc) are identified and translated into two-dimensional WOE (pressure vs. flowrate) to ensure maximum range of operating conditions that represents safe and reliable operation are covered. VLP/IPR performance curves were incorporated based on latest Validated Well Model. Optimum well operating window represents the maximum range of operating conditions within the Reservoir constraints assessed. By introducing actual Well Performance data the optimisation opportunities such as production/injection enhancement identified. During generating the Well Operating Envelops tremendous work being done to rectify challenges such as: most static data (i.e. design and reservoir limitations) are not digitized, unreliable real-time/dynamic data flow (i.e. FTHP, Oil/Gas rates etc), disintegrated and unreliable well Models and no solid workflows for Flow assurance. As a pre-requisite the workflows being developed to make data tidy i.e.ready and right, and Well Model inputs being integrated to build updated Well Models. Successful WOE prototype is generated for natural and artificially lifted Oil and Gas wells. Optimisation opportunities being identified (i.e. flowline pressure reduction, reservoir stimulation and bean-up) Proactive maintenance is made possible through dynamic WOE as a real time exceptional based surveillance (EBS) tool which is allowing Asset engineers to conduct the well performance monitoring, and maintain it within safe, stable and profitable window. Additionally, it allows to track all Production Enhancement jobs and seamless forecasting for new opportunities.
