A hydrological digital elevation model for freshwater discharge into the Gulf of Alaska

Abstract: Freshwater discharge into the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) has an important effect on coastal circulation. In order to incorporate freshwater discharge into a three‐dimensional ocean circulation model with both point sources (big rivers) and line sources (gridded coastlines) a digital elevation model (DEM) was developed to simulate freshwater discharge into the GOA under forcing of daily air temperature and precipitation data from National Centers for Environmental Predication/National Center for Atmospheric Research … Show more

“…The Cook Inlet/Gulf of Alaska climate is extreme. Winter storms associated with the Aleutian Low propagate to the Gulf of Alaska from the northwestern Pacific (Wang et al 2004). These storms and continental drainage winds bring high wind speeds (over 20 m s −1 ) and frigidly low air temperatures.…”

“…The mean winter wind is generally westward. In summer, the Aleutian Low is replaced by a high-pressure system (Wang et al 2004), resulting in a generally eastward (and much weaker) wind (Royer 1975).…”

“…In some SDI models the value of f m is taken to be the same for snow and ice melt (e.g., Wang et al, 2004) and other model implementations use different values of f m for snow and ice melt (e.g., Singh et al, 2000).…”

“…With the diverse conditions observed in these two lakes, they represent analogs to other ice-marginal lakes during a period of deglaciation. Wang et al (2004) have stated: ''The freshwater discharge into the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) has an important effect on coastal circulation.'' These authors also estimate that the mean annual total freshwater discharge into the Gulf of Alaska is between 19,000 and 31,000 m 3 s…”
