A kinematic study of skilled reaching movement in rat

Abstract: Background: In the rat, the single-pellet reaching task includes orienting, reaching, grasping and retracting movements. It has previously been described by notation techniques, high-speed video and cineradiographic recordings. Recently, high-definition cameras have been used to track paw and digit movements with DeepLabCut, a machine-learning algorithm for markerless estimation of paw position. New method: Our new approach consists of positioning three high-speed infrared digital cameras to track the full mot… Show more

“…The work by Berman et al (2014), the Datta lab (Wiltschko et al, 2015;Johnson et al, 2016) and Graving and Couzin (2020) are early examples that take a data-driven approach to unravel behavioral structure or ''grammar'' in data streams and relate so-called behavior ''syllables'' or words to behaviors relevant to animal behavior researchers. (Hsu and Yttri, 2019) and social behaviors (Nilsson et al, 2020), there are many potential applications of these tools, including defensive behavior measurement (Storchi et al, 2020), reaching movements (Parmiani et al, 2019), turning behavior (Mundorf et al, 2020). Multi-animal expansions of these tools will allow for more sophisticated behavior analysis between more than one individual, allowing for monitoring group-wide dynamics in various social patterns such as fighting, mating or parenting.…”

“…Although we validated the use of DLC during treadmill locomotion, it has been used for a wide variety of movements, such as jumping in the spider ( Brandt et al, 2021 ), reaching movements in the rat ( Parmiani et al, 2019 ), or cuttlefish predation techniques ( Wu et al, 2020 ). Studies that focus on non-locomotor rhythmic movements would also benefit from DLC.…”

“…One approach to improving the analysis of exploratory behavior is the use of tracking systems such as those using markers that are automatically or manually attached to body parts ( Zhou et al, 2008 ; Parmiani et al, 2019 ). In the last few years several methods such as LocoMouse ( Machado et al, 2015 ), DeepLabCut ( Mathis et al, 2018 ), JABAA ( Kabra et al, 2013 ), Optimouse ( Ben-Shaul, 2017 ), and LEAP ( Pereira et al, 2019 ) and DLCAnalyzer ( Sturman et al, 2020 ) have been developed to allow users to identify key points in videos, such as the location of a paw, and then automatically track the movement of those key points across video frames.…”
