This study investigates the potential of enhancing oil recovery from a Middle East heavy oil field via hot water injection followed by injection of a chemical surfactant and/or a biosurfactant produced by a Bacillus subtilis strain which was isolated from oil-contaminated soil. The results reveal that the biosurfactant and the chemical surfactant reduced the residual oil saturation after a hot water flood. Moreover, it was found that the performance of the biosurfactant increased by mixing it with the chemical surfactant. It is expected that the structure of the biosurfactant used in this study was changed when mixed with the chemical surfactant as a probable synergetic effect of biosurfactant-chemical surfactants was observed on enhancing oil recovery, when used as a mixture, rather than alone. This work proved that it is more feasible to inject the biosurfactant as a blend with the chemical surfactant, at the tertiary recovery stage. This might be attributed to the fact that in the secondary mode, improvement of the macroscopic sweep efficiency is important, whereas in the tertiary recovery mode, the microscopic sweep efficiency matters mainly and it is improved by the biosurfactantchemical surfactant mixture. Also as evidenced by this study, the biosurfactant worked better than the chemical surfactant in reducing the residual heavy oil saturation after a hot water flood.

A n efficient method for preparing petroleum sulfonates is described in this article. Petroleum sulfonates were prepared from five different refinery cuts and characterized by infrarred and ultra-violet spectroscopy. Their hydrophilic-lipophilic relative afinity was assessed by performing phase behavior scans. The prepared surfactants were evaluated in formulations for Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR), showing that, under the evaluation conditions, the solubilization ratios increase with the structural similarity between the crude oil and the surfactant molecules. It was confirmed that, when used as secondary surfactants, the petroleum sulfonates here prepared allow to achieve relatively high solubilization parameters. ABSTRACT PREPARACIÓN DE SULFONATOS DE PETRÓLEO Y EVALUACIÓN PARA RECOBRO QUÍMICO MEJORADO EN CAMPOS DE PETRÓLEO COLOMBIANOS 56N o presente trabalho é descrito um método eficiente para a preparação de sulfonatos de petróleo. Os sulfonatos de petróleo são preparados a partir de cinco cortes de refinaria diferentes e são caracterizados por espectroscopia de infravermelho e ultravioleta. Sua afinidade relativa hidrófilica lipófilica foi avaliada mediante a realização de comportamentos de fase. Os tensoativos preparados foram avaliados em formulações para Recuperação Química Melhorada demonstrando que, sob as condições de avaliação, as relações de solubilização aumentam com a semelhança estrutural que existe entre o petróleo cru e as moléculas do surfactante utilizado. Confirma-se que, quando são utilizados como surfactantes secundários, os sulfonatos de petróleo aqui preparados permitem atingir parâmetros de solubilização relativamente elevados. AbstractDevelopment of mature oil fields has been, and will increasingly be, an attractive subject.Mature field development practices can be divided into two major groups:(1) well engineering and (2) reservoir engineering. This paper focuses on the reservoir engineering aspects.An extensive review of previously reported reservoir management practices for mature field development is provided. After the definition of mature field and an overview, different aspects of mature field development are outlined. The first issue covered is the estimation of remaining reserves focusing on the determination of the amount and location of the residual oil after primary and secondary recovery using field, log, and core data. After valuing the remaining oil, methods to recover it are classified. They include tertiary recovery, infill drilling, horizontals, optimal waterflooding design for mature fields, optimal well placement and other reservoir management practices. Suggested or implemented field application examples for big fields owned by majors and small fields owned by independents are presented.Special attention is given to tertiary oil recovery. An extensive review and critical analysis of tertiary recovery techniques covering the theoretical, practical, and economical aspects of it are provided. The emphasis is on their applicability in mature field development in terms of effectiveness (incremental recovery) and efficiency (cost and recovery time). Laboratory and field scale applications of different tertiary recovery techniques, i.e., gas (double displacement, WAG, and miscible-immiscible HC, CO 2 , and N 2 ), chemical (dilute surfactant, polymer, and micellar injection), and thermal (air and steam) injection, conducted to develop mature fields are included. Specific examples of big/giant fields, fields producing for decades, and mid to small size fields were selected.Differences in reservoir management strategies for majors, independents, and national oil companies are discussed.
