A light scalar from walking solutions in gauge-string duality

Abstract: We consider the type-IIB background generated by the strong-coupling limit of Nc D5 branes wrapped on S2, and focus our attention on a special class of solutions that exhibit walking behavior. We compute numerically the spectrum of scalar fluctuations around vacua of this class. Besides two cuts, and sequences of single poles converging on one of the branch points, the spectrum contains one isolated scalar, the mass of which is suppressed by the length of the walking region. Approximate scale-invariance symmet… Show more

“…A precise ladder evaluation of m φ F φ based on this PCDC relation reads [12]: (m φ F φ ) 2 More recently, in another approach using holographic WTC [15] it was shown [11] that the strong gluon dynamics via the large technigluon condensate can realize a parametrically massless TD limit m φ /v EW → 0+ and hence naturally realize m φ ≃ v EW /2 ≃ 125 GeV, consistent with the LHC Higgs data. Similar arguments for realizing a parametrically light dilaton were given in somewhat different contexts [16].…”

“…spectra include an anomalously light state [72][73][74][75]. For instance, the Witten model has many properties that make it resemble the gravity dual of a non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, and the gravity calculation yields R ≃ 1.7 [67].…”

“…It would be satisfactory to find a model where the lightness of the scalar state has a natural dynamical explanation, rather than being the result of fine-tuning. We conclude by reminding the reader that in the special case studied in [102,103], a light state is JHEP05(2014)003 present in regions of the parameter space of the strongly-coupled theory, without having implemented any fine tuning with the boundary conditions (λ U → −∞ in those calculations).…”
