A low-cost, endoscopic, digital, still and video photography system for ENT clinics

Abstract: Image capture systems that display and record endoscopic images are important for documentation and teaching. We have modified a universal serial bus microscope to couple with most clinical endoscopes used in our practice. This very economical device produces images suitable for teaching, and potentially for clinical use. The implications of this could be significant for teaching, patient education, documentation and the developing world.

“…Mannequin training consisted of individual training on a high‐fidelity mannequin simulator (TruCorp Airsim Multi; TruCorp Ltd., Belfast, Northern Ireland). Fiberoptic endoscope (ENF‐GP; Olympus Medical Systems, Southend‐on‐Sea, UK) video images were displayed on a laptop computer using a low‐cost modified universal serial bus (USB) camera mounted on the endoscope. Each candidate made two passages of the FNL on a mannequin while receiving guidance during the procedure and verbal feedback afterward.…”

“…The need to connect high quality digital camera to endoscopic systems for the purpose of recording anatomical images is not new, and has been noted by several other groups. [1][2][3][4] Notably, Barr, 2009 used the cap of a plastic water bottle to connect a digital camera to a rigid endoscope with very good results. 4 Here, we use a similar "home-made" connection system, with the following advancements: (1) All the materials in our system can be purchased in an itemized fashion, from commercially available sources.…”

“…Thus, there is a need for lighter digital cameras in digital endoscopic photography, and several commercially available compact digital cameras (cDC) were also tested for endoscopic photography. 3 Such a solution is an inexpensive method capturing high quality images, but its viability is controversial. For example, recent literature has highlighted how the connection between the endoscope and the camera remains a problem.…”

“…The low-cost model group were given two attempts to pass the same fibre-optic endoscope through the low-cost model. For both groups, video images were displayed on a laptop computer using a low-cost modified universal serial bus camera mounted on the endoscope 12 . During training, individuals in both the low- and high-cost model groups received instructor guidance on the procedure, with feedback afterwards.…”
