A Mathematical Model for Intimate Partner Violence

Abstract: In the context of mathematical models applied to social sciences, we present and analyze a model based on differential equations for the intimate partner violence (IPV). Such a model describes the dynamics of a heterosexual romantic couple in which the man perpetrates violence against the woman. We focus on incorporating different key factors reported in the literature as causal or motivational factors to perpetrate IPV. Among the main factors included are the failures in self-regulation, the man’s need to con… Show more

“…The World Health Organization defines violence as “the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, against another person or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm mal-development, or deprivation.” It is considered as a common universal public health issue due to its frequency and consequences against community [ 1 ]. Ethnic violence is a comprehensive term for violence that is prompted from hatred or racism or ethnic stresses or ethnic conflict [ 2 ].…”

“…Mathematical modeling has a continuous fundamental role in understanding of the various aspects of dynamical system of real-world situations like [ 17 – 21 ]. It has been formulated and analyzed in different disciplines such as natural sciences as well as social science like [ 1 5 , 9 , 22 33 ]. Many researchers have applied infectious disease dynamics model to violence, racism, social media addition, corruption, and other social situations.…”

“…One of the phenomena that can be presented by the mathematical model is the impact and expansion of racism-corruption coexistence among the communities. In this study, we have reviewed a literature done by other scholars to examine the spread and transmission of racism and corruption single existence as infectious diseases with a mathematical modelling approach as stated in [ 8 , 9 , 12 , 15 , 18 , 21 23 , 27 , 28 , 30 , 31 , 39 45 ], some applied modeling approach for social media addiction [ 20 ], and some used modeling approach for violence [ 6 , 7 , 10 , 11 ]. However, to the best of our knowledge, no one has developed and analyzed a mathematical model on racism-corruption coexistence among individuals in a given society.…”

“…Violence against women (VAW) is a recognised social and public health concern in most sub-Saharan African countries [1][2][3][4][5]. Intimate partner violence (IPV), generally referred to as abusive actions, such as physical, sexual or psychological aggression, as well as coercive acts by a current or former intimate partner, is the most common form of violence against women (VAW) [6][7][8][9]. Although IPV can occur within male-to-female and female-to-male as well as same-sex partnerships, the male-to-female type is known to be the most common and is known to women of all ages, cultures, geographies and sexual orientations [10,11].…”
