A metal–covalent organic framework catalyst with pincer coordination units for boosting transfer hydrogenation of quinolines with ammonia borane

Abstract: A crystalline 2D nickel-coordinated bis(imino)pyridine metal–covalent organic framework (Ni-bipy-COF) material is easily fabricated by incorporating nickel ions into bis(imino)pyridine pincer COF skeleton. The Ni-bipy-COF catalyst can be applied to catalyze...

“…Tab-Dfp was synthesized by using a reported method with slight modications. 45,48,49 The synthesis procedure consisted of the Schiff base condensation reaction of 2,6-diformylpyridine (Dfp) (11.53 mg, 0.085 mmol) and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) benzene (Tab) (20 mg, 0.056 mmol) in 2 mL of a 1,4-dioxane/mesitylene mixture (1 : 1 v/v ratio). The reaction was conducted in a sealed pressure tube with a catalytic amount of acetic acid (50 ml, 6 M aqueous).…”

“…S4 and S5 †) presented a distinctive peak at ∼157 ppm corresponding to imine carbon (-C]N), conrming the Tab-Dfp and Tta-Dfp formation. 41,43,45,[48][49][50] The carbon atoms of the phenyl, triazine, and pyridine groups are responsible for the signals at 120, 126, 130, 150, and 167 ppm respectively, conrming the Tta-Dfp's chemical structure. Similarly, the carbon atoms of the pyridine and phenyl rings of the Tab-Dfp structure are responsible for the signals at 147, 136, 126, 121, 114 ppm, con-rming the Tab-Dfp's chemical structure.…”

“…As a newly emerging class of crystalline porous organic materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been increasingly utilized in catalysis, molecule separation, , energy storage, and other applications due to their predesignable structure, remarkable surface area, and excellent chemical stability. By introducing coordination units with a strong metal binding ability such as bipyridyl, , terpyridyl, bis(imino)pyridine, and porphyrins, , COFs can be designed as excellent support for transition metals and effectively reduce metal leaching. Nevertheless, such COFs are still dominated by two-dimensional (2D) network topology until now.…”

“…The related hydrogenation reaction has been generally achieved under harsh conditions such as high H 2 pressure (2.5–60 bar) or elevated temperature (353–433 K) . For comparison, formic acid, alcohol, and ammonia borane (NH 3 ·BH 3 ) are used as alternative hydride donors in the transfer hydrogenation of quinolines, which can be carried out under much milder conditions. On the other hand, the visible light-driven organic reactions with high selectivity are important to build a sustainable society. So far, there are few works on the photocatalytic transfer hydrogenation of quinolines. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop an efficient photocatalyst for the selective transfer hydrogenation of quinolines using a safe hydrogen source under mild conditions.…”
