A method to establish and revise descriptive data sets over the Internet

Abstract: In science, the internet is used at present mostly as an electronic publishing tool. It is highly desirable to increasingly use it as a working and production tool for collaborative projects in taxonomy and biodiversity as well. The method described here requires neither programming nor web-server expertise. Provided that the DELTA data standard is used, projects can be imported into the DeltaAccess database application. Using HTML data submission forms automatically generated from the database, projects can t… Show more

“…Their goal is to make a range of databases on biodiversity available to researchers and policymakers. Numerous other smaller-scale projects demonstrate the utility of Web-based taxonomic tools (Hagerdorn & Rambold 2000;Kendall et al 2000;Kang et al 2002;Struder-Kypke & Montagnes 2002). “…In 1997, an important technical step forward was achieved when genus data were trans ferred in the relational MS Access database DeltaAccess (now DiversityDescriptions), com bining the advantages of DELTA and a relational database system (Hagedorn 2001a). For generating HTML data entry forms for browser-based data input, specific report functions were implemented (Hagedorn and Rambold 2000). Apart from the two Web interfaces DeltaAccess Perl Script (DAP) and DeltaAccess Web Interface (DAWI) (both as beta ver sions), taxon subset-specific initialization files on the Web server were installed for usage with Intkey as an auxiliary application.…”

“…Several applications are available for storing structured taxon-based character data in order to generate identification keys and natural language descriptions, and to aggregate them from lower to higher taxa. Starting with the DELTA (DEscription Language for Taxonomy) ( 24 ) system ( 2 ) as the pioneer, others followed such as Lucid ( 25 ), Delta Access ( 26 ) and Xper2 ( 27 ). With the development of the XML-based SDD (Structure of Descriptive Data) standard ( 28 ), data in the DELTA and Nexus ( 29 ) standards ( 30 ) are becoming fully exchangeable, SDD compliance provided.…”
