Microgrids are a rapidly evolving and increasingly common form of local power generation used to serve the needs of both rural and urban communities. In this paper, we present a methodology to evaluate the evolution of the sustainability of stand-alone microgrids projects. The proposed methodology considers a composite sustainability index (CSI) that includes both positive and negative impacts of the operation of the microgrid in a given community. The CSI is constructed along environmental, social, economic and technical dimensions of the microgrid. The sub-indexes of each dimension are aggregated into the CSI via a set of adaptive weighting factors, which indicate the relative importance of the corresponding dimension in the sustainability goals. The proposed methodology aims to be a support instrument for policy makers especially when defining sound corrective measures to guarantee the sustainability of small, isolated microgrid projects. To validate the performance of the proposed methodology, a microgrid installed in the northern part of Chile (Huatacondo) has been used as a benchmarking project.

India's generating capacity is to grow from 232 GW in 2014 to 800 GW in 2030.Indian power system is becoming smarter by integration of information technology and communication system in conventional grid. Intelligent components make it possible to work traditional grid smart way by using features like two way communication, selfhealing, self-outage recovery, use of smart sensors etc. This provides reliable, stable, economic and quality power to end users by better utilization of currently available assets of power grid. In this paper efforts have been taken to explain Smart grid and its component, benefits of smart grid and how the smart grid is different from traditional grid. Also pilot projects Under R-APDRP scheme in India are discussed for various states. And various companies taking interest for development of smart grid are listed with its contribution of development.

Summary Smart grid mitigates the environmental concerns associated with the global warming and climate shifting and reduces the dependence of the power generation on conventional fossil fuels. This is done by energy efficiency improvement and renewable energy sources exploitation at large scales in the form of centralized systems as well as small‐scale systems in the form of microgrids and nanogrids. However, smart grid technology brings new challenges to the big data management of the new power system construction. Additionally, due to the large‐scale intermittent distributed renewable resources contribution and stochastic electric vehicles integration, the current energy management systems must undergo some improvements to handle the smart grid requirements. Cloud computing, as an intermittent based on‐demand computing model, serves an emerging solution to the aforementioned challenges. As a result, this paper presents a survey study on the smart grid and state of art energy management methods and the necessitation of the cloud computing incorporation in smart grid energy management. Then, the application of the cloud computing in energy management, demand side management programs, building energy management systems, energy hubs, and power dispatching systems have been discussed and associated models are addressed.
