A microscopic study of increased vascular permeability and leucocyte emigration in thermal injury in the chicken skin

Abstract: Microscopic study of the acute inflammatory reaction following thermal injury in the chicken skin, using the colloidal carbon technique, revealed an increase in vascular permeability both in capillaries and venules. The capillary response was of a shorter duration than the venular response which was prolonged. Venular leakage seemed to play the major role in oedema formation. Concurrent emigration of heterophils and monocytes, and participation of basophil leucocytes in the early stages appeared to be the cont… Show more

“…Similar venular response was also observed in PCA (Pillai et al, 1987b). Histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine and bradykinin have been found to induce an increase in vascular permeability in the venules only (Awadhiya et al, 1980b). Thus, the present venular response suggests its mediation by chemical mediators; the most likely candidates being histamine and slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A) (Chand, 1979).…”

“…Interestingly, emigration of basophils in significant numbers in PMA was noticed as early as 30 min in contrast to other types of injuries (Nair, 1973;Awadhiya et al, 1980aAwadhiya et al, , 1981bDhodapkar et al, 1984). This early participation of basophils and marked disappearance of their cytoplasmic granules suggest that basophils may in fact be playing a specific role in the chemical mediation of the anaphylactic reaction.…”

“…The response was similar to that evoked in the chicken by other chemical irritants (Awadhiya et al, 1980;Katiyar et al, 1992a).…”

“…Katiyar et al (1992) also recorded the formation of giant cells in granulation tissue during the healing of punched wounds. Several workers have described giant cell formation in the later stages of avian inflammation using different stimuli (Nair, 1973;McCorkle et al, 1980;Awadhiya et al, 1981;Dhodapkar et al, 1984;Sinha et al, 1987). This is in marked contrast to the situation occurring in mammals.…”
