A mixed-methods approach for analysing social support and social anchorage of single mothers’ personal networks

Abstract: The present paper analyses the relationship among social support and personal networks by focusing on social anchorage, which is a specific dimension of social support conveying to what extent people feel integrated into their personal networks. Specifying when, why, and how personal relationships play a significant role in individual lives is a common concern at the core of studies on social support. For this reason, the study adopts a strategy of analysis for ego-centred social support networks based on a mi… Show more

“…Can anger of the mother be counteracted by simultaneous happiness from the father? Such questions can be addressed by constructing networks based on Boolean (e.g., Aldana, Coppersmith, & Kadanoff, 2003; Kauffman, 1969) or logistic (e.g., Lumino, Ragozini, Duijn, & Vitale, 2016; Schumacher, Roßner, & Vach, 1996; van Borkulo et al, 2014) regression models, although one should be cautious when interpreting regression weights as they only reveal unique direct effects ignoring shared dynamics (Bulteel, Tuerlinckx, Brose, & Ceulemans, 2016b).…”

“…Therefore, personal networks are believed to play a vital, protective role (cf. Lumino et al 2017). The current case is thus particularly interesting for studying social support mobilization among the poor, as it combines high needs and low state provision.…”

“…” (p. 2267). Lumino et al’s (2017) study included “the joint use of network measures, statistical models, and narratives [that] allows taking into account the quantitative and qualitative dimensions of network relationships of low-income single mothers” (p. 784). Generally speaking, the equal priority studies dedicated approximately equal attention to both quantitative and qualitative strands by describing analysis and results of both strands as well as emphasizing each strands contribution in the discussion.…”
