“…Dansereau and Dees (2002) cited research in the field of cognitive psychology that has established the importance of representing issues graphically, rather than in written text, to aid the clustering and organisation of complex information. The use of node-link mapping has a strong evidence base as a clinical strategy in the addiction field, where maps are used to spatially organise related thoughts and actions and can be used by treatment counsellors to facilitate communication and problem solving in group and individual sessions (Czuchry & Dansereau, 2003). The intervention specifically used pre-structured guide maps, which had guiding questions and blank nodes to be filled in collaboratively by the counsellor and client.…”

“…Given previous research that has demonstrated the ef fectiveness of free mapping alone (see Czuchry & Dansereau 2003 for a review), it was expected that the current study would replicate these findings. Although an examination of the means suggests that free mapping improved opiate outcomes, this trend was not statistically significant, perhaps due to the small sample size in the current study.…”

“…Although demand characteristics cannot be ruled out in the current design, prior studies that have used between groups designs have also found treatment effects in favor of map ping (Czuchry & Dansereau 2003). Additional research, with methodologically stronger designs, are still required to ensure that mapping (free and guide) is appropriate at all stages of treatment.…”

“…This has been shown to lead to a range of advantages, including enhancements in key aspects of the counselling session, e.g. communication and attentional focus (Czuchry & Dansereau, 2003), as well as greater breadth and depth of ideas generated and greater counsellor insights about gaps in thinking (Dansereau, Dees, Greener, & Simpson, 1995;Newbern, Dansereau, & Dees, 1997). This technique is particularly effective in the early stages of treatment engagement through improving motivation and commitment (Czuchry, Dansereau, Dees, & Simpson, 1995;Dansereau et al, 1993;Knight, Dansereau, Joe, & Simpson, 1994), and application of NLM strategies has produced better outcomes at 6-and 12-months post-intervention in terms of reduced drug use (Czuchry, Newbern-McFarland, & Dansereau, 2009; Rowan-Szal, Bartholomew, Chatham, & Simpson, 2005) and better psychological functioning (Newbern, Dansereau, & Pitre, 1999).…”
