A model of urban demography

Abstract

This study develops an overlapping generations model that involves the endogenous determination of demographic and city structure to fully analyze the social and natural changes in city populations. We provide conditions under which the model exhibits the spatial features of demography observed in urban areas: city centres have a lower total fertility rate than suburbs and larger cities have a lower total fertility rate than smaller cities. Through calibration, we also show that spatial factors have a significant impact on demographic characteristics and city growth.

“…обобщающие работы (Jackson 1985;Fishman 1987;Seligman 2004;Keil 2018) и многие другие) демографическая проблематика менее заметна, чем вопросы специфики миграции, изменений социальной структуры и характера интеракций внутри и за пределами субурбий, архитектурнопространственных трансформаций. Вместе с тем опыт исследования Канады (Aiura, Sato 2014), европейских (Eggerickx 2013;Kulu, Boyle, Andersson 2009), в том числе постсоциалистических стран Центральной и Восточной Европы , показывает, что интенсивный рост пригородов за счет субурбанизационной миграции может приводить к заметному изменению характера демографических процессов. Общий анализ демографической ситуации в пригородных территориях Иркутской области (Григоричев 2023) показал, что и в России возможно формирование заметной специфики демографических процессов в субурбиях по сравнению с общерегиональными трендами.…”
