A Modified Side-to-Side Anastomosis Using a Circular Stapler Reduces Anastomotic Leakage in Colonic Surgery

Abstract: Background. Anastomotic leakage (AL) remains one of the serious complications after colonic surgery. Method. A prospective interventional study to assess a modified technique of creating the ileocolic, colic-colic, and colorectal side-to-side anastomoses using a circular stapler. The primary endpoint was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this technique in the reduction of AL. Computed tomography scan was performed when AL was clinically suspected. Result. One hundred and forty-five patients who underwent … Show more

“…However, they reported in favour of mechanical anastomoses when doing a combined analysis, also demonstrating that cases utilizing mechanical staplers have shorter operating times compared to handsewn procedures [8,9]. Luo et al [10] described a technique using a circular stapler to reconstruct the bowel in different colonic segments and presented an anastomotic leakage rate of 0.7%. Segmental resection of the splenic flexure for tumours in this area has been proved to have similar oncological outcomes to a more extended resection.…”
