A morphometric study of nuclei, nucleoli and nuclear bodies in goitres and papillary thyroid carcinomas

Abstract: Significant positive correlations were found between the nuclear surface-to-volume ratio and the volumetric density of nucleoli, as well as between the volumetric density of nucleoli and the volumetric and numerical densities of complex nuclear bodies in goitres and papillary thyroid carcinomas.

“…The available evidences indicate that the nucleolar changes in morphology or function are the consequence of increased demand for ribosome biogenesis. PTC has several significant alterations which are observed both in the fine structure and in the number of nucleoli [ 17 , 18 ]. These studies raise the possibility of the interference of a ribosome biogenesis thus inducing PTC pathogenesis.…”

“…4,5,13 We focused on the characterization of the nucleolus because the increase in number and area of them have been recognized as important characteristics for discriminating malignant cells from benign cells. Analysis of nuclear and nucleolar volume have been developed by Guttman and Halpern 18 and Sobrinho-Simões et al 19 using paraffin-embedded tissues and electron microscopy, respectively. Significance of these factors between the benign urothelial cell and the UC groups was evaluated.…”

“…Significance of these factors between the benign urothelial cell and the UC groups was evaluated. Analysis of nuclear and nucleolar volume have been developed by Guttman and Halpern 18 and Sobrinho-Simões et al 19 using paraffin-embedded tissues and electron microscopy, respectively. These are, however, difficult to apply to urine cytology specimens and are also time-consuming.…”
