A multi-level analysis of counselor attitudes toward the use of buprenorphine in substance abuse treatment

Abstract: In spite of evidence that buprenorphine is effective, safe, and offers greater access as compared with methadone, implementation for treatment of opiate dependence continues to be weak. Research indicates that legal and regulatory factors, state policies, and organizational and provider variables affect adoption of buprenorphine. This study uses hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) to examine National Treatment Center Study (NTCS) data to identify counselor characteristics (attitudes, training, beliefs) and orga… Show more

“…Likewise, perceived effectiveness was re-coded into a second binary dependent variable, where 0=scale responses of 1–4 (“not effective”; 49% of valid responses), and 1=scale responses of 5–7 (“effective”). The coding of these variables is consistent with prior research (Abraham et al, 2009; Abraham et al 2011; Rieckmann et al, 2011). …”

“…Counselor- and program-level independent variables were identified from previous research (Abraham et al, 2011; Rieckmann et al, 2011; Knudsen et al, 2005; 2007a). In preparation for hierarchical modeling, SPSS version 18 was used for descriptive, bivariate, and preliminary multivariate analysis of the dependent variables.…”

“…Among the many topics to be covered should be discussions of OUD as a chronic disorder that requires extended and ongoing treatment (51) and reducing SUD and treatment related stigma (52, 53). In order to facilitate dissemination, adoption, and implementation of MAT, providers and counselors also need to be better informed about and have a more favorable attitude toward MAT (5456), suggesting the need for initial and ongoing training and continuing medical education.…”

“…Counselors employed in programs already using buprenorphine 25,26 are more likely to be aware of buprenorphine and rank it favorably. Similarly, counselors employed in centers offering methadone are more likely to be accepting of its use.…”
