A Multicenter Study of Pediatric Macular Holes: Surgical Outcomes With Microincisional Vitrectomy Surgery

Abstract: Purpose: Pediatric macular holes occur often related to trauma and rarely require surgical intervention. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate outcomes of microincisional vitrectomy surgery. Methods: A multicenter retrospective consecutive case series was conducted of pediatric patients undergoing surgery for macular hole repair. Results: A total of 31 eyes from 8 centers were included in this study. The mechanism of macular hole development was blunt trauma in 30 eyes (97%) and industrial laser in … Show more

“…We identified 12 studies with a total of 117 pediatric patients with a mean age of 12 years who received vitrectomy for the treatment of TMHs 5,31,36,[38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45] (Table 2). Anatomic closure rates after the first surgery ranged from 77% to 100% with a mean overall closure rate of 88%.…”

“…The largest multicentered retrospective study included 31 eyes from 8 centers across the United States to assess the outcome of microincisional vitrectomy in pediatric patients with TMHs. 38 The surgical approach varied based on surgeon preference but internal limiting membrane peeling, and internal tamponade have been uniformly performed. An anatomic closure rate of 81% after primary surgery and 94% after second surgery was achieved.…”
