“…The flow rate of gas through each of the four controllers is determined by a set-point voltage and each of these voltages are provided by a MS-DOS compatible computer (model 325, Corona, Cordata, Scarsdale Technology, Don Mills, Ontario) equipped with a board (8-bit, model PXB-721/DMA8-I0/ADM8-10, QuaTech, Inc., Akron, OH) having the capability for 4-channel digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversion as well as multichannel digital input-output. Further details of how these components work together in controlling gas flow rate and composition have been described elsewhere (6).…”

“…Measurements of CO2 production and H2 evolution from intact attached nodulated roots were made with the computercontrolled gas exchange system described previously (13). Control and experimental plants were sealed in their growth pots and attached to the gas exchange system.…”

“…The design of the growth pots (8) permitted sealing for open circuit gas exchange measurements of H2 and CO2 evolution from the root systems. The gas exchange system contained computer-controlled mass flow controllers (model FMA-100 series, Omega Engineering, Stamford, CT) which allow linear changes in gas concentrations at a constant total flow rate.…”

“…CO2 evolution was measured by infrared gas analyzers (model 225, Mark III, Analytical Development Corp., Hoddeson, UK), 02 evolution with an O2 electrode (model CB 1 D, Hansatech, King's Lynn, UK), and H2 evolution with custom-built H2 analyzers (11). The complete system has been described previously (6,8). At a gas flow rate of 500 mL min-' past the root systems, the time constant for the entire system was approximately 30 s. Immediately following the final anaerobic treatment, the root system was reexposed to 100% N2 for approximately 5 min to ensure that leghemoglobin was completely deoxygenated during the 45-s treatments.…”
