A multifactorial model of masticatory performance: the Suita study

Abstract: Previous studies have identified various factors related to masticatory performance. This study was aimed to investigate variations and impacts of factors related to masticatory performance among different occlusal support areas in general urban population in Japan. A total of 1875 Japanese subjects (mean age: 66·7 years) were included in the Suita study. Periodontal status was evaluated using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). The number of functional teeth and occlusal support areas (OSA) were recorded, … Show more

“…Tooth loss leads to a deterioration in chewing efficiency 23,24 , which often introduces an unnoticed change in diet, as the food choice is limited to what is feasible to chew with a reduced occlusal surface and/or removable prostheses 25 . Often, the poor chewing capacity related to tooth loss is aggravated by ill-fitting dentures, infection, and pain, potentially leading to protein energy malnutrition, especially among older patients 26,27 .…”

“…Male participants in the lower maximum bite force group showed increased risk of all-cause mortality compared with those in the upper maximum bite force group. The range of MOF is gender-sensitive and affected by the presence or absence of teeth [1517]. Furthermore, as the average life span increases, further studies on very elderly people aged 85 years or older are required.…”

“…Mastication, which aims to break food into discrete portions by chewing to make it easier to swallow, is the first step of the digestive process . In this process, smaller food particles swallowed lead to greater absorption of nutrients, which are essential for health maintenance, especially in elderly patients .…”
