The optical materials based on excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) have garnered significant attention due to their unique photophysical properties and applications in sensors and imaging agents (probes). These materials exhibit an intrinsic four‐level photocycle scheme through the enol (E)–keto (K) phototautomerization process, resulting in a large Stokes shift, environmental sensitivity, and potential for ratiometric sensing. This review primarily focuses on elucidating the luminescence mechanism and structure‐property relationships of recent ESIPT molecules, as well as exploring the sensing applications of phosphorescent functional materials.

The photophysical features of 3‐(benzo[d]oxazol‐2‐yl)‐2‐hydroxy‐5‐methoxy benzaldehyde (BOHMB) were investigated through experimental (J. Phys. Chem. A 2019, 123, 10,246–10,253) and theoretical (Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy 2022, 266, 120,406) methods. However, the effect of substituent groups on the excited state proton transfer process has not been studied. In this work, the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) dynamics and photophysical properties of BOHMB with different substituent groups were investigated by density‐functional theory (DFT) and time‐dependent DFT (TDDFT) methods at CAM‐B3LYP/6‐311G(d,p) level. The primary parameters related to hydrogen bonding and infrared vibration frequency were obtained to understand the ESIPT properties of BOHMB derivatives. The results indicate that the excited‐state intramolecular hydrogen bond (ESIHB) strengthening behaviors, and the intramolecular hydrogen bond O1–H2···O3 for 1a in the S1 state is the strongest among BOHMB derivatives. From the calculated potential energy curves, it can be inferred that the substitution and position of NH2 and NO2 groups will regulate the excited‐state energy barrier and thus affect the ESIPT process. The molecular absorption peak and fluorescence peak are affected by different substituting groups and different positions.

Preparation and Specific Detection of Zn²⁺ Ions of Polyacylhydrazones with Polymerization‐Induced Emission

The trace element Zn2+ plays an important role in the human body, but it is challenging to realize its qualitative and quantitative detection. Herein, inspired by the specific detection of the commercial dithizone to Zn2+, a series of polyacylhydrazones with polymerization‐induced emission (PIE) properties were successfully prepared and applied to the specific recognition and detection of Zn2+. It was found that all selected monomers did not emit fluorescence. In contrast, the as‐prepared polyacylhydrazone could emit strong fluorescence at 455 nm, due to the intramolecular aggregation of acylhydrazone groups along the macromolecular chains, indicating a significant PIE effect. As we expected, the polyacylhydrazone could specifically recognize and detect Zn2+ ions from 17 metal ions by the significantly enhanced fluorescence with a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 66 nM. Additionally, the complexation ratio of 2:1 between the repeating units in polyacylhydrazone and Zn2+, the coordination of Zn2+ with N and O atoms on acylhydrazone groups, and the fluorescence enhancement induced via intramolecular proton transfer were confirmed by 1H NMR and FT‐IR measurements. In conclusion, the successful preparation of PIE‐active polyacylhydrazones and the specific detection of Zn2+ ions provide a useful reference for the molecular design of new functional materials on the base of the traditional detection methods.This article is protected by copyright.
