A Multilayered Coil Antenna for Ingestible Capsule: Near-Field Magnetic Induction Link

Abstract: A compact multilayered stacked ingestible coil antenna is investigated for medical systems. The inductive link, comprising a 5-layer transmitter coil antenna and a 3-turn receiver spiral coil, is modeled through a tissue-simulating liquid modeling the human body. The diameter and the thickness of the transmitter coil are respectively equal to 1 cm and 5 mm, while the dimensions of the receiver coil are equal to 7 8 cm. The variations of the position and the orientation of the capsule antenna are taken into acc… Show more

“…Here, radio waves can be used to communicate over long distances, and various types of antennas are being investigated, e.g., meander, 10,14 microstrip, 11 spiral, 12 FED, 13 inverted-F, 15 fractal, 16 helical, 17 and multi-layered coil. 30 To work in harmony with the surroundings, multiple functionalities such as flexibility, 31−33 stretchability, 34 and disassembly 32,35,36 have been integrated into antennas. However, there is still an obstacle to producing the key component in the systems, the IC chip, from edible materials.…”

“…However, some of these systems have short communication distances or require the user to wear a receiver pad. Here, radio waves can be used to communicate over long distances, and various types of antennas are being investigated, e.g., meander, , microstrip, spiral, FED, inverted-F, fractal, helical, and multi-layered coil . To work in harmony with the surroundings, multiple functionalities such as flexibility, stretchability, and disassembly ,, have been integrated into antennas.…”

“…Hence, the ingestible antenna must be designed meticulously so that it is able to meet the requirements of the wireless link in terms of power and efficiency. Various types of antenna designs have been proposed in the literature for ingestible systems such as helix antenna [4], microstrip antenna [5], coil antenna [6], and inverted-F antenna [7].…”

“…As another antenna structure used for power and signal transmission in the MHz band, the inductive coupling coil can easily realize the planar antenna structure and multiple resonant frequencies [7,8,9,10]. In our previous study [9,10], the authors designed and fabricated planar-structured dual-band and triband coil receiving antennas for WCE signal reception in the 10-60 MHz band, and a single-band transmitting antenna for communication performance evaluation.…”
