A Multilevel Device for Ground‐Water Sampling and Piezometric Monitoring

Abstract: A simple inexpensive device for sample collection and for monitoring of ground‐water potential at many levels from a single borehole installation has been developed. The device consists of a bundle of polypropylene tubes contained inside a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe that is installed in the aquifer. Each tube protrudes through the wall of the pipe at a different elevation where it serves as a point water sampler and piezometer. The tip of each tube is encased in fine‐meshed stainless‐steel screening. The de… Show more

“…1 The monitoring and sampling network com prise multilevel samples (PICKENS et al, 1978) and bundle piezometers (EGBOKA, 1980 andMACFARLANE et al, 1980). These were installed at various localised depths in the groundwater flow systems, and at many locations to enable the establishment of well-defined boundaries of the isotopes and dissolved geochemical con stituents.…”

“…The network enabled the establishment of well-defined boundaries of 3 H and other geochemical constituents, the age, and the directions of flows for the Borden and Pinawa aquifers. Multilevel samplers (Pickens et al, 1978) and bundle piezometers (Fig.2) with small-diameter intake zones provided samples from the tubes and piezometers respectively. Sampling was carried out at narrowly-spaced depth-intervals, thereby ensuring that little or no mixing occurred between groundwaters of different age zones and strata.…”
