A multimodal approach to cardiovascular risk stratification in patients with type 2 diabetes incorporating retinal, genomic and clinical features

Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases are a public health concern; they remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. Phenotypic information available from retinal fundus images and clinical measurements, in addition to genomic data, can identify relevant biomarkers of cardiovascular health. In this study, we assessed whether such biomarkers stratified risks of major adverse cardiac events (MACE). A retrospective analysis was carried out on an extract from the Tayside GoDARTS bioresou… Show more

“…6,23 Comparing our results with previous studies, our definition of postoperative recurrence of CSDH and postoperative AIH are in accordance with medical norms and logic.CSDHs are usually unilateral, but do present as bilateral in ~ 9.2-34.9% of cases.5,28−30 However, not all patients with bilateral CSDH warrant evacuation of both sides at initial presentation. “…9,10,20−22 Previous reports have shown a CSDH mortality rate of 1.8-32%. 6,23 Surgical complications, such as irritability, wound infection and acute intracranial hemorrhage (AIH), occur at a rate of 0-38%. 24−26 AIH, in particular, can cause severe neurological dysfunction, leading to a poor prognosis.…”

“…RMPs included central retinal arteriolar equivalent (CRAE), central retinal venular equivalents (CRVE), arteriole to venular ratio (AVR), fractal dimension and tortuosity quantified from optic disc centred fundus images using the semi-automated software Vessel Assessment and Measurement Platform for Images of the Retina (VAMPIRE; VAMPIRE group, University of Dundee, Dundee, Scotland, Version 3.1, Fig. 1 ), by a trained grader that was blinded to participant data [ 37 , 38 ]. Analysis was performed mostly on left eye retinal images except when unavailable or of insufficient quality, in which case right eye images was used.…”

“…RMPs (central retinal arteriolar/ venular equivalents [CRAE/CRVE], arteriolar to venular ratio [AVR], fractal dimension and tortuosity) were measured from optic disc centred fundus images, collected at participant health assessment and analysed using the semi-automated software Vessel Assessment and Measurement Platform for Images of the Retina (VAMPIRE; VAMPIRE group, University of Dundee, Dundee, Scotland, Version 3.1; Fig. 2 ), by a qualified grader blinded to participant data [ 25 , 26 ]. Images were taken from the left eye except when unavailable or of poor quality, in which case the right eye image was used.…”
