A Multimodal Clinical Approach for the Treatment of Bone Metastases in Solid Tumors

Abstract: Context: Bone metastasis (BM) is a frequent complication of cancer, representing the third most common site of secondary spread in solid cancers behind the lung and liver. Bone metastasis is found in up to 90% of prostate and breast cancer patients. They can cause significant complications, such as pathological fractures and paralysis of the spine, which decrease daily functioning and quality of life (QoL) and worsen prognosis. The growing life expectancy of cancer patients due to improvements in systemic ther… Show more

“…PC-derived bone metastases are often characterized as osteoblastic but usually have an underlying osteoclastic component. They can induce adverse complications, called skeletonrelated events (SRE), including pain, pathological fractures, and paralysis of the spine, which decreases the quality of life and worsens prognosis [10].…”

“…Recent advancements in cancer therapy have significantly extended the life expectancy of patients with bone metastases, including spinal metastasis [ 1 ]. Spinal metastases can lead to spinal cord compression and intractable pain, ultimately resulting in the loss of ambulatory function [ 2 ].…”
