A Multimodal Nonlinear Tuned Vibration Absorber

Abstract: This paper presents a tuning methodology to design a vibration absorber able to mitigate the vibratory amplitude of multiple resonances of a nonlinear structure. The linear characteristics of the absorber are first tuned to obtain the equal-peak design on every mode to be controlled when the structure is behaving linearly. Nonlinearities are then introduced intentionally in the absorber to counteract the effect of the nonlinearities inside the host structure. Their functional form is chosen according to a prin… Show more

“…The performance of the TMD depends on the achieved mass ratio on meeting the specific tuning criteria. In the context of distributed flexible host structures, this is highly influenced by the modal displacement associated with the point of integration of the TMD and the modal geometry of the critical mode: Hence the placement of the TMD must be optimised based on this [3]. Moreover, variants of TMDs with the inclusion of inerters have been proposed as an enabler of higher effective mass ratios [4].…”

“…hard-disk vibrations [1] , vibrations of turbine blades [ 2 , 3 ]). Piezoelectric shunt usually consists in the electrical connection between a piezoelectric transducer bonded to the vibrating structure and a properly designed passive electrical network [4][5][6][7][8] . According to the layout of the electrical network, it is possible to perform mono-modal control (e.g.…”
