A multiple gene genealogy reveals phylogenetic placement of Rhopalostroma lekae

Abstract: Rhopalostroma lekae was collected on bark of wood in Chiang Rai Province, Northern Thailand and isolates from the sexual state produced a nodulosporium-like asexual state in culture. A combined multigene sequence analysis was used to infer the phylogenetic position of R. lekae and its affinities with other xylariaceous genera. Rhopalostroma is confirmed to have particularly close affinities with the genera Phylacia and Thamnomyces. Secondary metabolite profiling of R. lekae showed the species to produce binaph… Show more

“…sequence data in GenBank retrieved from material that is not available in the public domain for verification of the taxonomy). Recent work by Daranagama et al (2014Daranagama et al ( , 2015 provided additional rDNA and RPB2 sequence data, in particular for important Anthostomella species and other related taxa. Because of these studies, and comprehensive treatments of the Xylariaceae in phylogenies obtained exclusively from housekeeping gene sequences by Hsieh et al (2005Hsieh et al ( , 2010, the data matrix for a multigene genealogy has steadily increased over the past decade.…”

“…According to the records (i.e. Whalley & Thienhirun 1996, Whalley et al 1998, Daranagama et al 2014 it is evident that Rhopalostroma species distribution is limited to Northern region within Thailand. Rhopalostroma brevistipitatum is another example of this.…”

“…& Whalley (Hawksworth & Whalley 1985) and R. hawksworthii Vaidya et al (Vaidya et al 1991) were grown in culture and produced nodulisporium-like asexual morphs. Stadler et al (2010) and Daranagama et al (2014) have described nodulisporium-like asexual morphs in culture from R. angolense and R. lekae Whalley et al The phylogenetic affinities of Rhopalostroma were shown by Stadler et al (2004Stadler et al ( , 2010 and Daranagama et al (2014). In this study we introduce a new species of Rhopalostroma from Northern Thailand.…”
