A Multiple Listener Crosstalk Cancellation System Using Loudspeaker-Dependent Regularization

Abstract: Binaural audio requires the use of crosstalk cancellation if reproduced using loudspeakers. A three-listener crosstalk cancellation system has been designed and built as part of this work. Simulations for di↵erent loudspeaker distributions are presented and a large system span is shown to increase low-frequency crosstalk cancellation performance whilst a denser loudspeaker distribution in front of a given listener increases mid to high-frequency crosstalk cancellation. The system's performance under perturbati… Show more

“…A typical example is to correct the nonideal frequency response of loudspeakers, ranging from speakers in mobile devices, computer speakers, and car audio to large-scale public address systems [1,2]. Often the transfer function of the room is also equalized together with the loudspeaker [3][4][5][6]. Other applications include the modeling of the same systems for simulation purposes [7,8], modeling and equalization of headphones [9], modeling of head-related transfer functions for 3D audio [10][11][12], or the synthesis of musical instrument sounds [13][14][15], to name a few.…”

“…For example, a signal can be transmitted in Ambisonics format but reproduced binaurally. Another example is a combination of cross-talk cancelled binaural surround reproduction using a real loudspeaker array [27,28]. In order to switch between formats, several methods are used such as the binaural decoder for Ambisonics [29].…”
