A multiwavelength study of the M dwarf binary YY Geminorum

Abstract: We review the results of the 1988 multi-wavelength campaign on the late-type eclipsing binary YY Geminorum. Observations include: broad-band optical and near infra-red photometry, simultaneous optical and ultraviolet (IUE) spectroscopy, X-ray (Ginga) and radio (VLA) data. From models fitted to the optical light curves, fundamental physical parameters have been determined together with evidence for transient maculations (spots) located near quadrature longitudes and intermediate latitudes.Eclipses were observed… Show more

“…Some of the most extensive simultaneous radio and optical monitoring has been on active M dwarfs. During flares the optical component is seen to evolve on a much shorter timescale than its radio counterpart (Osten et al 2005;Butler et al 2015). The prolonged radio decay is attributed to magnetic mirroring near footpoints where field lines converge, increasing the field strength and reflecting synchrotron-producing electrons (e.g., Aschwanden et al 1998).…”

“…The ubiquitous manifestations of the magnetic activity of YY Gem, including frequent flaring, broad-band photometric and emission line variability, non-thermal X-ray and ultraviolet emission, have been investigated by many authors. Since the seminal work by Kron (1952), the out-of-eclipse photometric variation of YY Gem was interpreted in the context of the rotational modulation caused by a patchy, nonuniform surface brightness distribution on one or both components (Torres & Ribas 2002;Butler et al 2015). Large and frequent flare events have been reported for the system and investigated with the help of multiwavelength monitoring campaigns spanning the frequency range from X-ray to radio (Butler et al 2015, and references therein).…”

“…However, literature contains little direct, quantitative information on the magnetic field properties and surface structure morphology of YY Gem A and B. Several studies attempted to model the out-of-eclipse photometric time series observations of the combined light from the system in terms of dark surface spots (Torres & Ribas 2002;Butler et al 2015). Such analyses generally require strong assumptions regarding the spot characteristics (e.g.…”

“…Recently, a multiwavelength study of YY Gem was presented by Butler et al (2015). They included broad-band optical, nearinfrared, ultraviolet, and radio data to determine the physical parameters and transient spots located near quadrature longitudes.…”
