A NAC transcription factor and its interaction protein hinder abscisic acid biosynthesis by synergistically repressing NCED5 in Citrus reticulata

Abstract: Although abscisic acid (ABA) is a vital regulator of fruit ripening and several transcription factors have been reported to regulate ABA biosynthesis, reports of the effect of ABA on citrus ripening and the regulation of its biosynthesis by a multiple-transcription-factor complex are scarce. In the present study, a systematic metabolic, cytological, and transcriptome analysis of an ABA-deficient mutant (MT) of Citrus reticulata cv. Suavissima confirmed the positive effect of ABA on the citrus ripening process.… Show more

“…There are many reports of the effects of ABA on ripening, as discussed by Zhu et al [ 157 ] and reviewed recently by Kou et al [ 158 , 159 , 160 ]. ABA is synthesised from carotenoids via the action of 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dehydrogenase (NCED) [ 161 , 162 ].…”

“…Interestingly, recent reports suggest that the grape U-box E3 ubiquitin ligase VlPUB38 negatively regulates berry ripening in an ABA-dependent manner by degradation of abscisic-aldehyde oxidase (VlAAO), the enzyme catalyzing the last step of ABA biosynthesis ( Yu et al, 2020 ). A synergistic interaction between CrNAC036 and CrMYB68 appears to inhibit CrNCED5-mediated ABA biosynthesis at the transcription level in citrus fruit ( Zhu et al, 2020 ).…”
