A nationwide study on readmission, morbidity, and mortality after umbilical and epigastric hernia repair

Abstract: This first prospective nationwide study on elective umbilical and epigastric hernia repair found low morbidity and mortality but a high readmission rate mostly because of wound problems, seroma formation, or pain. Future research should focus on early outcomes in terms of wound problems, seroma formation, and pain after umbilical and epigastric hernia repair.

“…This allows the detection of poor and good results, if they appear more frequently than expected. National Scandinavian registries, like the Swedish Hernia Database and the Danish Hernia Database on hernia surgery, have demonstrated this [14]. Also multicentre databases like the Veterans Affairs Medical Centers database and the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database have been able to detect poor outcome results in hernia surgery [57].…”

“…Most problems are wound related, including seromas, hematomas, superficial or deep surgical site infections, and mesh infections. 58,[81][82][83][84][85][86] Patients also may experience chronic pain at the site of the repair. 87 Many of these complications do not require specialized treatment, but are often associated with multiple visits to the surgeon's office, medical therapy, hospital admission, or additional operative procedures.…”
