A New Approach for Noise Suppression in Cochlear Implants: A Single-Channel Noise Reduction Algorithm1

Abstract: The cochlea "translates" the in-air vibrational acoustic "language" into the spikes of neural "language" that are then transmitted to the brain for auditory understanding and/or perception. During this intracochlear "translation" process, high resolution in time-frequency-intensity domains guarantees the high quality of the input neural information for the brain, which is vital for our outstanding hearing abilities. However, cochlear implants (CIs) have coarse artificial coding and interfaces, and CI users exp… Show more

“…In recent years, the invasive and implantable devices have been well applied in cochlear implant, [1,2] deep brain stimulation, [3,4] recording qualities is one of the key issues, where high-performance coating materials are intensely required. To date, various materials with roughed micro-or nano-structures have been reported in the literature actively based on approaches of enhancing capacitance of electrodes.…”

“…This finding is corroborated by the ample literature documenting that CI users experience more difficulties in acoustic environments common to daily situations than their normal-hearing peers. Although much work is continuously devoted to improving the eCI, such as improved sound processing and multipolar stimulation, these advancements cannot fully address the prevailing limitations of inadequate spectral, fine-temporal, and dynamic range representation that are inherent of electrical artificial hearing ( Zhou et al, 2020 ). This suggests that a novel modality of stimulation for artificial hearing, such as optical stimulation, would be warranted.…”

“…The signalto-noise ratio (SNR) at which one listener could recognize a certain percentage (e.g., 50%) of the words in a sentence is defined as an SRT. To quantitatively estimate speech-innoise perception ability, SRTs with target sentences in stable or babble noises are usually measured through an adaptive psychophysical procedure [25].…”
