Nowadays, communications systems have become more mobile and personal, that means materials used must be as smaller as possible. Low weight reduced volume and low cost are some of the characteristics that must be accomplished in modern telecommunication equipment. It is well known that the antenna is one of the most important devices in the radiofrequency (RF) section. This element needs to perform effectively according to the necessities. To achieve low weight, small volume and low cost, the size needs to be reduced, but keeping the main characteristics. The size reduction of antennas can be made by several techniques according to the type of the element. In this study we will present the fundamental limitations of small antennas as a major constraint of antenna miniaturization, then we will discuss major techniques that have been reported in literature to reduce the size of an antenna. Feasibility, features, effects on the miniaturisation of antennas of each technique will be presented and discussed. At the end of this study we will give some examples of real systems that used antennas miniaturization techniques.

Abstract-The resonant frequencies and input impedance of a microstrip-fed third order Hilbert slot antenna are studied as function of antenna and substrate parameters. A distinct dualband characteristic is observed. Findings from HFSS simulation are validated by prototype fabrication and experimental measurement. The two resonant frequencies maintain a ratio of approximately 1.4 for narrow slots. A design parameter, L ax is identified which needs to be about 0.80λ g at the lowest operating frequency. The Hilbert slot provides a unidirectional pattern when operated against a metallic ground plane while maintaining dual-band characteristics.

SUMMARYWith a view to applications to base stations for mobile communication, the results of experimental and conventional analysis of a small antenna are reported. The present antenna consists of a closely wound coil-shaped external conductor and a coaxially placed inner linear conductor. The bottom of the linear conductor is connected to the center conductor of the coaxial feed and the lower part of the coil-shaped conductor is connected to the outer conductor of the coaxial conductor. In this paper, a method of shorting the upper part of the coil-shaped conductor with the inner conductor and of opening this part are proposed as feed methods. The antenna height of the former is about 1/26 wavelength and that of the latter is 1/80 wavelength. Both structures can be matched to a 50-Ω feed line without any matching circuit. The present antenna attached to a small metallic case has a vertically polarized omnidirectional pattern in the horizontal plane and a figure-8 shape in the vertical plane, similar to those of a usual monopole antenna. The measured gain is about -15 dBd relative to the dipole.
