A New Coated Catalyst for the Production of Diacetone Alcohol via Catalytic Distillation

Abstract: A method has been developed for the production of catalytically active coated ceramic distillation saddles for use in catalytic distillation (CD) columns. A thin layer of magnesium acetate was applied to ceramic Norton saddles using a sol-gel dip-coating method. The magnesium acetate coating was converted to the catalytically active magnesium oxide (MgO) via a temperature-ramped calcination program. The kinetic performance of the MgO-coated saddles for the aldol condensation of acetone was determined in a batc… Show more

“…The reaction mixture, 1 mol of acetone (AC) and 2.8 g of as-prepared catalysts were stirred vigorously throughout the whole experiment, for 2 h, in order to ensure the reaction reaching equilibrium (Dechaine & Ng, 2008). After the addition of 1.5 g of isooctane as the internal standard, the products were measured by a gas chromatograph equipped with an Rtx-WAX 30 m × 0.32 mm column (Restek, USA) and an FID detector.…”

“…Podrebarac et al (1998) applied catalytic distillation to the production of DAA using an Amberlite IRA-900 anion exchange resin and provided experimental data for the first time. An MgO/ceramic catalyst for catalytic distillation, improving the DAA selectivity, was produced using a sol-gel dip-coating method (Dechaine & Ng, 2008).…”

“…Diacetone alcohol, the self-aldol condensation product of acetone [313,314] was shown by Chen et al to be a suitable precursor to jet fuel range C 10 and C 12 cycloalkanes. [315] In the first step, hydrogenation of diacetone alcohol to 2-methyl-2,4-pentanediol was achieved with complete conversion and 99 % yield over Ru/C (60°C, 0.1 MPa H 2 ).…”

“…This process is especially suitable for consecutive reactions and those reactions restricted by equilibrium, and thus has been commercially used for the production of many ethers 27,28 and esters, 29 such as methyl tert -butyl ether, ethyl tert -butyl ether, methyl acetate and butyl acetate. For the aldol condensation of acetone, CD process has also been studied using ion exchange resins 30,31 and MgO-coated saddles 32 as catalyst. For example, using Amberlite IRA-900 resin as catalyst, 33 the concentration of DAA in CD experiment was twice the value in conventional fixed bed reactors.…”
