A new environmental performance index based on the carbon footprint, VOC emissions, and waste in a printing house

Abstract: An environmental performance index (EPI) is introduced to evaluate the activities of a printing house based on three impacts: carbon footprint, volatile organic compound emissions, and waste. As the main causes of environmental degradation are the operation of machinery and usage of materials, we aimed to integrate the three impacts to interpret the EPI or the environmental friendliness of printing houses. Our results demonstrate that environmental awareness increased with improvements to the EPI, following th… Show more

“…The Analytic Hierarchy Process, Goal Programming, and the Multi-Attributive Ideal-Real Comparative Analysis for solving ranking cases between alternatives are a few examples of appropriate evaluation methods and tools to support the sustainability implementation in planning/design practices that were reviewed by Morano et al in 2021 [34]. The creation of composite indicators for gauging socioeconomic well-being and the relative variation following unexpected occurrences have also been covered in the reference literature [35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43]. Long et al (2020) depicted the sustainable performance of an islands-set in China referring to ecological wellbeing performance by the integration of the Three-Dimensional Ecological Footprint and Urban-Scale Human Development Index [35].…”

“…Shah et al (2019) used the Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability Index, which combines energy and environmental indicators, to monitor energy security and environmental sustainability of South Asian countries [36]. Hansuebsai et al (2020) introduced an environmental performance index to evaluate the activities of a printing house based on three impacts: carbon footprint, volatile organic compound emissions, and waste [37]. Richter and Behnisch (2019) combined geostatistical methods (landscape structure metrics, spatial multi-criteria assessment, weighting approaches) and a multitude of data related to environmental concerns.…”

“…Presently in India, most of the companies are using SB inks for rotogravure printing due to good printability, machinability, excellent drying, and having no issues like foaming, pH, adhesion etc (Epa 2001). Most of the printing units are trying to reduce the VOCs emissions and CFPs from their printing process, including utilizing the supply chain cycle e ciently (Kliopova-Galickaja and Kliaugaite 2018; Hansuebsai et al 2020). Printing ink consists of pigment, resin, functional additives, and vehicles.…”
