A new fluorescent anatomic pulmonary segmentectomy using PDD endoscope system™ and vitamin B2: evaluation in a clinical setting using living animal

Abstract: Our new fluorescence technique in a clinical setting involving a PDD endoscope system™ vitamin B2 enabled accurate and safe anatomic pulmonary segmentectomy, with enough strong and long fluorescence in living pig lungs.

“…One of these methods is the diagnosis endoscope system that allows clear and accurate identification both on the surface and inside the investigated system. In addition, it has been a simple and safe method for a variety of surgical operations. , Endoscopy is considered an effective approach in interventional surgery. Electrospinning is a cost-effective and simple method that has been developed for preparing polymer nanofibrous systems for various applications, such as sensors, electrode materials, filtration, cosmetics, drug delivery, and tissue scaffolding .…”

“…Several methods have been reported to help identify the intersegmental plane during anatomical VATS segmentectomy, including use of inflation-deflation of the lung with clamping and unclamping of the relevant bronchus, and endobronchial or systemic injection of ICG or other dyes. [2][3][4] Unfortunately, the inflationdeflation method may fail to correctly identify the plane, particularly in patients with emphysema, and may jeopardize visualization and surgical maneuvering during VATS. [1][2][3] On the other hand, intravenous injection of ICG implies systemic diffusion of the dye and requires several hours to allow uniform pulmonary distribution.…”

“…Vitamin B2 is a water-soluble substance that served as a coenzyme of oxidative phosphorylation and can be exited to illuminate by nearultraviolet light of which the wavelength is approximately 450 nm. Waseda et al introduced the fluorescence technique of vitamin B2 through bronchus in pig models ex vivo and in vivo, indicating that an extremely clear intersegmental plane could be observed in all test samples and remained in high contrast even one hour later (29,30). Yet, the clinical application of this method has not been carried out.…”
