A new functional ecological model reveals the nature of early plant management in southwest Asia

Abstract: The protracted domestication model posits that wild cereals in southwest Asia were cultivated over millennia prior to the appearance of domesticated cereals in the archaeological record. These 'predomestication cultivation' (PDC) activities are widely understood as entailing annual cycles of soil tillage and sowing, and expected to select for domestic traits such as non-shattering ears. However, the reconstruction of these practices is mostly based on indirect evidence and speculation, raising the question whe… Show more

The first steps towards the domestication of goats are known from the Zagros Mountains in the ninth millennium BC (Zeder & Hesse 2000), but, as with cereals and legumes, there were likely multiple loci and different pathways towards such domestication (Stiner et al 2022).…”

“…Steps towards farming in Southwest Asia involved the exploitation of wild cereals by Late Pleistocene hunter-gatherers (Weiss et al 2004;Snir et al 2015), their cultivation during the tenth to ninth millennium BC by Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA) communities in the Middle Euphrates and Southern Levant (e.g. Wilcox & Stordeur 2012;Colledge et al 2018;Weide et al 2022) and the exploitation of legumes, fruits and nuts in eastern regions-today's Iran and Iraq (Asouti & Fuller 2013).
