A new global ocean ensemble system at the Met Office: Assessing the impact of hybrid data assimilation and inflation settings

Abstract: We have developed a global ocean and sea‐ice ensemble forecasting system based on the operational forecasting ocean assimilation model (FOAM) system run at the Met Office. The ocean model Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO) and the community ice code (CICE) sea‐ice model are run at 1/4∘$$ {}^{\circ } $$ resolution and the system assimilates data using a three‐dimensional variational assimilation (3DVar) version of NEMOVAR. This data assimilation (DA) system can perform hybrid ensemble/variationa… Show more

“…This aspect is outside the scope of this initial study, focused on characterising the sensitivity of cyclone near‐surface wind speeds to ocean and wave feedbacks. Further investigation should also focus on the link between the uncertainty in the atmosphere and ocean boundary layers, implementing IC perturbations in the ocean and wave models and then integrating with an atmosphere–ocean–wave coupled data assimilation system (Lea et al ., 2021).…”

“…The top level is approximately 1 m thick and the vertical resolution decreases with depth. An ensemble version of FOAM has recently been developed (Lea et al ., 2022), consisting of 37 ensemble members. To account for model uncertainty, stochastic parametrisation is applied on all ensemble members except one (the control member).…”

“…As in Lea et al . (2022), univariate localisation is used in this study, meaning that localisation is only applied to individual control variables and does not change the prescribed balance relationships. The ensemble correlation information between different control variables is therefore discarded, and the localisation matrix becomes block‐diagonal.…”
